People Over Plastic Rally and Advocacy Day - May 7

Join ZWC members and the fantastic folks from Beyond Plastics for a rally and advocacy day to help pass the New York State Packaging Reduction & Recycling Infrastructure Act. This bill would:
- Save taxpayer dollars by forcing polluting companies to pay to deal with their packaging waste rather than taxpayers footing the bill as we currently do.
- Require companies to reduce their single-use packaging by 30% over 12 years.
- Require 75% of the remaining packaging to be reused and/or recycled by 2052.
- Ban 17 of the most toxic chemicals and substances currently used in packaging including lead, PFAS, formaldehyde, phthalates, bisphenols, vinyl chloride, cadmium, mercury, benzene, halogenated flame retardants, perchlorate, and toluene.
- Provide much-needed funding to support recycling, refill/reuse and composting programs at the municipal level.
- Reduce climate emissions from packaging and packaging waste as directed by the state’s landmark Climate Leadership & Community Protection Act.
- Prohibit the false solution of “chemical recycling” from counting towards recycling targets.
We'll also be supporting The Bigger Better Bottle Bill which would:
- Modernize current state law, and would recover billions of valuable recyclable containers from the waste stream.
